Conversation Pieces

Conversation Pieces, a collaboration with Adam Overton, consisted of a week of workshops with "conversation experts," a booklet of performance scores, and a series of collages and props.

The Conversation Pieces project was geared toward exploring interpersonal communication within the conversational dimension. The week first addressed the nature and limits of conversation, and then moved to consider alternative methods of verbal and non-verbal communication. A week of workshops explored topics including: linguistics with C. J. Koenig, mediation with Dorit Cypis, Bohmian Dialog with Sara Roberts, Energy healing with Bita Sharif and Dyads with Paz Fernandez.  Elana Mann and Adam Overton composed a book of conversation scores to be performed during everyday conversation, which was available in the workshop space for free.  Also included in the space were props for conversation and collages using the 19th century painting genre called "Conversation Pieces" (which was the main inspiration for the name of the project).  Lastly, Elana and Adam enlisted friends and colleagues as subjects of conversation research and asked them to record aspects of daily conversation like eye contact, facial expression, etc.  This research information was compiled in a booklet in the workshop space.
