6-8pm, Tuesday October 23, 2018, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL
A showcase of the choreographic, interactionist dance, and instructionist performance works profiled in Propositional Attitudes, edited by Elana Mann and John Burtle (Golden Spike Press, LA, 2018) and Perfect Worlds: Artistic Forms & Social Imaginaries by Michael Workman (StepSister Press, Chicago, forthcoming) occurs in the Commons on the museum's second floor.
Throughout the day, visitors can access and enact the works using the museum as a site of performance. The following choreographic scores are available at the admissions desk and in The Commons day-of:
Sharna Fabiano, Synchronized Walking
Aaron Finbloom, Guidelines for Reflective Intonations
Ali Kheradyer, The Wait of Us
Lucky Dragons, User Agreement
Elana Mann, For Mothers and Children
Emily Mast, One Score for Two People
Adam Overton, Get Just a Little Bit Closer
Ultra-Red, Protocols for a Soundwalk
Michael Workman, Intimate Conversation
Starting at 6:15 pm, two performances are presented in the Commons. First, Udita Upadhyaya shares Guidelines for Collapse & Care, and second Jenn Freeman, aka Po'Chop, with David Perales Albert showcase dual "process performances." These performances are followed by a conversation between artists Elana Mann, John Burtle, and Michael Workman on the legacy of instructionist performance and the works presented, with time for feedback from the audience about the experience of enacting the works. The event concludes with Mat Rappaport performing a mobile architectural remix range on the streets around the MCA. Books are available for sale throughout the evening program.
On October 26–28, presenting partner SITE/less Chicago hosts Propositional Worlds, an expanded program of other participatory, written choreographic works from both books. Visit their website for the full schedule and additional information.
In Progress is a series designed to give patrons a look into the process of artists, thinkers, and curators. It is organized by Curator of Public Programs January Parkos Arnall and Assistant Curator of Public Programs Christy LeMaster.
