Portals

January 15 – March 26th, 2022, Angels Gate Cultural Center, San Pedro, CA

Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) is pleased to present a new art exhibition, PORTALS, opening Saturday, January 15th, 2022 with a public reception from 2pm-5pm. The exhibition will remain on view in the AGCC galleries through March 26th, with a virtual artist talk on February 17th at 8pm, Pacific Time.

PORTALS is curated by Stephanie Sherwood and includes works by Erin Harmon, Erika Lizée, Elana Mann, Yevgeniya Mikhailik, Alicia Piller, Esther Ruiz, Howard Schwartzberg, Svetlana Shigroff, and Adam Rabinowitz featured in an auxiliary site at Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles.

“Portals—doorways and interdimensional gateways—have been a point of fascination as long as humans have been telling stories. The work that the artists create in PORTALS explores gateways as facilitators of human growth and inspires change within us.” -Stephanie Sherwood, Curator

Located at Angels Gate Cultural Center overlooking the Port of Los Angeles, PORTALS reflects on the transformative nature of passageways - contemplating ideas of boundaries, entrance and egress, progress, and travel into the unknown. Doorways, both metaphorical and physical, have reappeared in our social consciousness consistently as significant elements in popular cultural narratives and mythology. These portals facilitate growth through the change they welcome into our worlds. Working in tapestry, drawing, neon sculpture, resin and site-specific installation among other mixed media, the artists explore transformation, with the Port of Los Angeles as a relevant foil. PORTALS invites an experiential look at the work of nine contemporary artists whose works speak to the nature of these life-altering gateways.

Work by Adam Rabinowitz will be on view at Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles in February, opening date to be announced. The AGCC Gallery is open for visitors Thursdays – Saturday, between the hours of 10am and 4:00pm. More information about the exhibition and planning your visit can be found at angelsgateart.org.

PORTALS is made possible with generous support from the Port of Los Angeles Community Investment Program and the Pasadena Art Alliance.
